Peter was drafted into the Army to do two years National Service. During his training he represented the Home Counties Brigade at Rugby before being posted overseas to Malaya where he served for 15 months on an active service station attached to a Military Hospital. He represented the Mercury Athletics Club at the Selangor State championships and was a member of the 4 x 800 Metre relay team. He also won the 200 and 800 Metre races at the RAMC Selangor championships. Peter gained the GSM (bar Malaya) medal for his services.
